This chapter turns to the Hajj as it was experienced during the journey. The Hajj of the Ottoman period was a gigantic project that fostered a number of adjacent devotional practices: owing to their geographical position, Bosnian Hajjis could move from their province to multiple centres, managing their bodies in places of wonder and mundanity.

Large regional medical centers have traditionally been viewed as a one way conduit of patients from outlying geographic areas to the metropolitan "mecca" of care. In reality, this perception is not far from the truth. The larger center saw smaller rural hospitals as "feeders" for referrals often resulting in resentment and strained relationships.
