Mechanical asphyxia by hanging: A look back in search for evidence

Forensic Science International
The lack of pathognomonic findings to diagnose death by hanging is a well-known problem in forensic practice. This review examines the significance of signs that have been proposed over time as useful in forensic diagnosis, reporting the frequency of occurrence in the various published case histories.

An Unusual Mechanical Asphyxia in a Homicide-Suicide Case by Smothering and Strangulation

The American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology, 2006
A very unusual homicide of 2 children by smothering and strangulation by means of a rubber adhesive band carried out by the mother who committed suicide by the same manner is presented. Smothering is supposed to be one major cause of death in child homicide. Suicide by smothering is relatively uncommon. Suicidal smothering by winding strips of adhesive

Detection of Thyroglobulin in Bloodstains as an Aid in the Diagnosis of Mechanical Asphyxia

Journal of Forensic Sciences, 1984
Abstract Mechanical forces applied to the neck region are known to release certain amounts of thyroglobulin into circulation. In this experiment, an attempt was made to detect thyroglobulin in bloodstains as an aid in the diagnosis of mechanical asphyxia. Experimental bloodstains containing thyroglobulin at concentrations of 1, 2, 5, and

[Obturation, aspiration, and inhalation in case of mechanical asphyxia].

Sudebno-meditsinskaia ekspertiza, 2011
This paper aims at updating terminology employed for the characteristic of selected forms of mechanical asphyxia. The medical terms "obturation", "aspiration", and "inhalation" are not infrequently used by forensic medical experts and pathological anatomists engaged in diagnostics of mechanical asphyxia, elucidation of the mechanism of the accompanying
