Modelling of high power mechanical DC circuit breaker

2015 IEEE PES Asia-Pacific Power and Energy Engineering Conference (APPEEC), 2015
This paper presents the EMTP modelling of mechanical DC CB for transmission applications. Modelling structure of a mechanical DC CB is firstly presented with all the main components included. A theoretical background for dimensioning main components is provided.

Development and Testing of EHV Mechanical DC Circuit Breaker

2019 5th International Conference on Electric Power Equipment - Switching Technology (ICEPE-ST), 2019
The paper presents recent development progress of a mechanical EHV DC circuit breaker with current injection scheme. An EHV level DC circuit breaker composes of multi-break HV vacuum interrupters, a current injection circuit and a metal oxide surge arrester (MOSA) energy absorption unit.

Mechanical arcless dc circuit breaker by current zero operation

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1992
A mechanical arcless dc circuit breaker is proposed and has been constructed. A rectifying device is used to block the reverse current of the breaker, allowing the breaker to open under zero current condition created by the discharge of a commutation circuit.

Protection of full bridge MMC DC grid employing mechanical DC circuit breakers

2017 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2017
This article studies the protection of DC grid based on full bridge (FB) MMC and mechanical DC circuit breakers. A four terminal DC grid cropped from the CIGRE B4 DC grid test system is used as the studied system. Three level cascaded controllers are installed at each FB MMC, along with central DC grid dispatcher.

Investigations on Electromagnetic Operating Mechanism of DC Vacuum Circuit Breaker

2018 IEEE 3rd Advanced Information Technology, Electronic and Automation Control Conference (IAEAC), 2018
Breaking capacity of DC circuit breaker is one of the important technical indicator, breaking performance of operating mechanism restricting its development. DC vacuum circuit breaker based on the principle of force zero-cross in electric power system, short-circuit current can be effectively breaking circuit.

Transient Current Interruption Characteristics of a Novel Mechanical DC Circuit Breaker

IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, 2018
With the rapid development of multiterminal direct current (MTDC) grids, high-voltage direct current circuit breakers (HV-DCCB) capable of interrupting currents within 5 ms are in urgent demand. The mechanical DCCB has always been one of the main proposals for HV-DCCBs.

Research on effect of circuit parameters on breaking characteristics of mechanical DC circuit breaker

Electric Power Systems Research, 2020
Abstract Whether fault current can be broken quickly and reliably depends on dynamic characteristics of LC resonant commutation branch of mechanical DC circuit breaker.Thereby, the breaking characteristics of mechanical DC circuit breaker based on LC resonant commutation are studied in this paper. The topological structure and action time sequence of

A mechanical arcless dc circuit breaker for a superconducting magnet system

Fusion Engineering and Design, 1993
Abstract Next fusion research experiments plan to use many superconducting magnets. When a quench phenomenon is observed, the current should be interrupted to protect the magnet. Therefore, a dc circuit breaker is necessary. There are four technical situations to be considered for the dc circuit breaker system; (1) high rated current, (2) smaller ...

Adaptive reclosing strategy for the mechanical DC circuit breaker in VSC-HVDC grid

Electric Power Systems Research, 2021
Abstract The overhead line has wide application prospect in the future VSC HVDC grid. However, compared with the dc cable, the fault probability (especially the nonpermanent fault), is much higher on the overhead line. To enhance the system power supply reliability, effective reclosing strategy must be configured for the DCCBs. The existing automatic

DC transmission grids with fault tolerant LCL VSC converters and mechanical DC circuit breakers

10th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2012), 2012
The introduction of HVDC light technology has been a significant step towards developing DC transmission grids. However, all voltage source converters (VSC) employed with HVDC are completely defenceless against DC faults, and significant further technical advances are required to achieve security and reliability levels that exist with AC grids.
