Mechanical arcless dc circuit breaker by current zero operation

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1992
A mechanical arcless dc circuit breaker is proposed and has been constructed. A rectifying device is used to block the reverse current of the breaker, allowing the breaker to open under zero current condition created by the discharge of a commutation circuit.

A mechanical arcless dc circuit breaker for a superconducting magnet system

Fusion Engineering and Design, 1993
Abstract Next fusion research experiments plan to use many superconducting magnets. When a quench phenomenon is observed, the current should be interrupted to protect the magnet. Therefore, a dc circuit breaker is necessary. There are four technical situations to be considered for the dc circuit breaker system; (1) high rated current, (2) smaller ...

A Fast Mechanical Switch for Medium-Voltage Hybrid DC and AC Circuit Breakers

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2015
This paper presents the design and experimental results of a Thomson coil-based fast mechanical switch for hybrid ac and dc circuit breakers rated at 30-kV voltage and 630-A current. The compact design with optimized circuit parameters and geometric dimensions of components targets 2-mm travel within 1 ms when driven by a 2-mF capacitor bank precharged

Protection of full bridge MMC DC grid employing mechanical DC circuit breakers

2017 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2017
This article studies the protection of DC grid based on full bridge (FB) MMC and mechanical DC circuit breakers. A four terminal DC grid cropped from the CIGRE B4 DC grid test system is used as the studied system. Three level cascaded controllers are installed at each FB MMC, along with central DC grid dispatcher.

Capacitor-Split Assist Switch Driven Resonant DC Circuit Breaker with Reduced Mechanical Switch Interruption Stress

2025 IEEE 3rd International Power Electronics and Application Symposium (PEAS)
DC circuit breakers (DCCBs) are pivotal for securing stable DC system operation. Resonant DCCBs (RCBs) have attracted significant research interest due to their ability to create multiple forced zero-crossings for mechanical switches (MS), high ...

Investigation of a Mechanical Switch within a Hybrid Circuit Breaker for Protection in DC Grids

2020 IEEE 66th Holm Conference on Electrical Contacts and Intensive Course (HLM), 2020
Transmission and distribution of electrical energy has been achieved by using alternating current (AC) almost exclusively until now. Direct current (DC) pushes forward into long range energy transmission, server farms, mobility and manufacturing systems, being former AC dominated areas.

Feasibility Study of a Hybrid Mechanical-Static DC Circuit Breaker for Superconducting Magnet Protection

IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, 2009
This paper describes the feasibility studies of a hybrid dc circuit breaker (CB) for quench protection of superconducting magnets rated for current up to some tens of kiloamperes (kA) and voltage of several kilovolts (kV). The proposed scheme is based on a mechanical switch paralleled to a fully controlled static CB; integrated gate commutated ...

DC transmission grids with fault tolerant LCL VSC converters and mechanical DC circuit breakers

10th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2012), 2012
The introduction of HVDC light technology has been a significant step towards developing DC transmission grids. However, all voltage source converters (VSC) employed with HVDC are completely defenceless against DC faults, and significant further technical advances are required to achieve security and reliability levels that exist with AC grids.

Active Damping of Ultrafast Mechanical Switches for Hybrid AC and DC Circuit Breakers

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2017
An active damping method for Thomson coil actuated ultrafast mechanical switches is proposed, including its control. Ultrafast mechanical switches are crucial for both dc and ac circuit breakers that require fast-acting current-limiting capabilities. However, fast motion means high velocity at the end of travel resulting in over-travel, bounce, fatigue,
