Interaction Mechanisms of Synchronously Performed Adjacent Excavations

open access: yesShanghai Jiaotong Daxue xuebao, 2022
An adjacent excavation model based on the hardening soil-small strain (HSS) constitutive model was established by using the numerical method, which was compared with the single excavation model and the adjacent excavation model without considering the wall-soil friction.

A Female‐Locust‐Inspired Hybrid Soft‐Stiff Robotic Digger: Mimetics and Implications for Digging Efficiency

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Female desert locusts dig underground to lay their eggs. They displace soil, rather than removing it, to create a tunnel. We analyze burrowing dynamics and 3D kinematics and design a locust‐inspired hybrid soft–stiff robot that reproduces this mechanism. The results show the natural strategy minimizes energy, whereas alternative patterns raise costs up

Preparation and Application of Nano-Calcined Excavation Soil as Substitute for Cement

open access: yesNanomaterials
Rapid urbanization in many cities has produced massive amounts of problematic excavation soil. The direct disposal of untreated excavation soil often leads to significant land use and severe environmental concerns.

Study on the Fragmentation Characteristics and Dust Generation Mechanism of Coal Cutting by Pick

open access: yesAsia-Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT During underground excavation, coal dust generation threatens miners' health and damages ecosystems. Its generation is directly influenced by cutting pick performance and inherent coal properties. This study investigates the effects of coal properties and cutting parameters on coal fragmentation characteristics from a mesoscopic perspective ...

A perspective from the Mesozoic: Evolutionary changes of the mammalian skull and their influence on feeding efficiency and high‐frequency hearing

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The complex evolutionary history behind modern mammalian chewing performance and hearing function is a result of several changes in the entire skeletomuscular system of the skull and lower jaw. Lately, exciting multifunctional 3D analytical methods and kinematic simulations of feeding functions in both modern and fossil mammals and their ...

Variation in parrot jaw musculature

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Interspecific morphological differences in some superficial jaw muscles of parrots. Abstract Psittaciformes, the order encompassing parrots and their relatives, are highly diverse and generally known for having a strong beaks used for multiple behaviors. The muscles related to the masticatory apparatus should reflect this functional complexity; however,
