Dabigatran is Less Effective Than Warfarin at Attenuating Mechanical Heart Valve-Induced Thrombin Generation

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association : Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2015
Background Patients with mechanical heart valves (MHV) require warfarin to prevent thromboembolism. Although dabigatran was as effective as warfarin for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation when compared with warfarin in patients with MHV, the study ...

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Statistics of heart failure and mechanical circulatory support in 2020

open access: yesAnnals of Translational Medicine, 2020
Heart failure is increasing in prevalence, with approximately 26 million patients affected worldwide. This represents a significant cause of morbidity and mortality.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Changes and classification in myocardial contractile function in the left ventricle following acute myocardial infarction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In this research, we hypothesized that novel biomechanical parameters are discriminative in patients following acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

Investigating the cell of origin and novel molecular targets in Merkel cell carcinoma: a historic misnomer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study indicates that Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) does not originate from Merkel cells, and identifies gene, protein & cellular expression of immune‐linked and neuroendocrine markers in primary and metastatic Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) tumor samples, linked to Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) status, with enrichment of B‐cell and other immune cell

Bone mechanical loading reduces heart rate and increases heart rate variability in mice

open access: yesBone Reports
Cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis are clinically associated. Bone adapts to mechanical forces by altering its overall structure and mass. In response to mechanical strain bone cells release signaling molecules and activate the nervous system.

Spatiotemporal Organization of Electromechanical Phase Singularities during High-Frequency Cardiac Arrhythmias

open access: yesPhysical Review X, 2022
Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is a life-threatening electromechanical dysfunction of the heart associated with complex spatiotemporal dynamics of electrical excitation and mechanical contraction of the heart muscle.

Topological modes bound to dislocations in mechanical metamaterials

open access: yes, 2015
Mechanical metamaterials are artificial structures with unusual properties, such as negative Poisson ratio, bistability or tunable vibrational properties, that originate in the geometry of their unit cell.
