3D Pixel Mechanical Metamaterials

Advanced Materials, 2019
AbstractMetamaterials have unprecedented properties that facilitate the development of advanced devices and machines. However, their interconnected building structures limit their applications, especially in the fields that require large deformation, rich programmability and efficient shape‐reconfigurability.

Digital Mechanical Metamaterials

Proceedings of the 2017 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2017
In this paper, we explore how to embody mechanical computation into 3D printed objects, i.e., without electronic sensors, actuators, or controllers typically used for this purpose. A key benefit of our approach is that the resulting objects can be 3D printed in one piece and thus do not require assembly.

Magneto‐Thermomechanically Reprogrammable Mechanical Metamaterials

Advanced Materials, 2022
AbstractFuture active metamaterials for reconfigurable structural applications require fast, untethered, reversible, and reprogrammable (multimodal) transformability with shape locking. Magnetic control has a superior advantage for fast and remotely controlled deployment; however, a significant drawback is needed to maintain the magnetic force to hold ...

Understanding Metamaterial Mechanisms

Proceedings of the 2019 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2019
In this paper, we establish the underlying foundations of mechanisms that are composed of cell structures---known as metamaterial mechanisms. Such metamaterial mechanisms were previously shown to implement complete mechanisms in the cell structure of a 3D printed material, without the need for assembly. However, their design is highly challenging.

Active mechanical metamaterials

Mechanical metamaterials are man-made composites exhibiting unusual mechanical macroscopic properties, such as variable stiffness or negative Poissons ratio. The recently popular active metamaterials can vary their properties not only by their manufactured geometry, but also by external factors such as thermal, electromagnetic or chemical actuation ...
