Causes and Mechanisms in Psychosomatic Phenomena

Journal of Human Stress, 1979
Abstract The bases for a presumed crisis in psychosomatic research are examined with special reference to the nature of evidence required to establish etiologic significance in the field of digestive diseases. Future research should exploit the rapid advances that have been developing in neurophysiology in order to identify the central and peripheral ...

Metoprolol withdrawal phenomena: Mechanism and prevention

Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, 1982
Eight patients taking metoprolol (300 mg/day) for essential hypertension were studied after abrupt withdrawal and placebo replacement of the drug. A 52% average rebound increase in cardiac chronotropic sensitivity to isoproterenol and 15% rebound rise in resting heart rate occurred in all patients between 2 to 8 days after metoprolol withdrawal (P less

Quantum Mechanical Phenomena

2021
We begin the essential with two simple problems from quantum mechanics. The examples demonstrate typical effects that the mathematical formalism discussed in Chap. 3 must correctly describe.

Discrete computational mechanics for stiff phenomena

SIGGRAPH ASIA 2016 Courses, 2016
Many natural phenomena which occur in the realm of visual computing and computational physics, like the dynamics of cloth, fibers, fluids, and solids as well as collision scenarios are described by stiff Hamiltonian equations of motion, i.e. differential equations whose solution spectra simultaneously contain extremely high and low frequencies.

Mechanisms and Mental Phenomena

Philosophy of Science, 1947
One gains the impression from occasional remarks in the psychiatric literature that there is a feeling of dissatisfaction with the state of flux of the various concepts, serving as tools to help us understand our patients. This paper is submitted as an attempt to point out some of the reasons why psychiatric notions suffer from certain deficiencies. If,

Mechanisms involved in alpha-adrenergic phenomena

American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism, 1985
Epinephrine and norepinephrine exert many important actions by interacting with alpha 1- and alpha 2-adrenergic receptors in their target cells. Activation of alpha 2-adrenergic receptors causes platelet aggregation and other inhibitory cellular responses.

Nonlinear phenomena in respiratory mechanical measurements

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1993
The impact of nonlinearities on the assessment of respiratory mechanics was examined using a block-structured model (BSM) featuring both flow (V) and tidal volume (VT) nonlinearities. The model consists of an airway compartment (AC) in series with a tissue compartment (TC). The AC is a series connection of a resistance, an inertance, and a nonlinear V-
