The therapeutic opportunities and pitfalls of using iron ion chelators to treat neurodegenerative diseases

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Although too much iron in the brain promotes neurodegeneration, iron ion chelators have had mixed effects in clinical trials. This review explains why; some chelators do not render the iron redox‐inactive (e.g., L1) whereas others do (e.g., desferrioxamine).

Epigenetic reprogramming of lineage switching in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cancer cells rarely commit to a single identity. Epigenetic mechanisms and tumor microenvironment cues push epithelial cells toward flexible, hybrid states that can shift into mesenchymal, neuroendocrine, or stem‐like fates, driving metastasis, drug resistance, and tumor heterogeneity. Targeting the epigenetic regulators behind these transitions, using

The Effect of Fluoride Mouthwashes on Orthodontic Appliances’ Corrosion and Mechanical Properties: A Scoping Review

open access: yesHygiene
Fluoride mouthwashes are often recommended by dental professionals due to their proven benefits for oral hygiene. However, it is vital to acknowledge that these products may have undesirable effects on orthodontic treatment outcomes, particularly by ...

Surface, Volumetric, and Wetting Properties of Oleic, Linoleic, and Linolenic Acids with Regards to Application of Canola Oil in Diesel Engines

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
Oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids are the main components of canola oil and their physiochemical properties decide on the use of canola oil as fuel for diesel engines.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

IMPDH inhibition enhances cytarabine efficacy in SAMHD1‐expressing leukaemia cells via guanine nucleotide depletion

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytarabine is a key therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), but its efficacy is limited by the dNTPase SAMHD1, which hydrolyses its active metabolite. Screening nucleotide biosynthesis inhibitors revealed that IMPDH inhibitors selectively sensitise SAMHD1‐proficient AML cells to cytarabine.

STUDIES ON THE MECHANISM OF HYPERSENSITIVITY PHENOMENA [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Experimental Medicine, 1959
The interaction of fresh rat and guinea pig serum with washed preformed immune aggregates has been studied with respect to the loss in hemolytic potency of the serum, diminution of the C'3; activity, and appearance of anaphylatoxin. It has been found that the formation of anaphylatoxin, as judged by its effect on capillary permeability ...

Metastasis on pause: How dormant tumor cells stay hidden within the tumor microenvironment and evade immune surveillance

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dormant cancer cells can hide in distant organs for years, evading treatment and the immune system. This review highlights how signals from the surrounding tissue and immune environment keep these cells inactive or trigger their reawakening. Understanding these mechanisms may help develop therapies to eliminate or control dormant cells and prevent ...
