Perforated Meckel's diverticulum
Surgery, 2001A 72-year-old woman had abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. An appendectomy had been performed 50 years earlier. Physical examination was notable only for periumbilical pain and abdominal rigidity. No abdominal mass or vascular sounds were noted. The white blood cell count was 21,000. Liver function studies and urinalysis were normal.

A case of incomplete intestinal obstruction caused by a giant Meckel's diverticulum in a 13-year-old girl is reported. Short resection of the ileum with the diverticulum and end-to-end anastomosis was carried out. The possibilities of diagnosis and treatment as well as the controversial classification of this rare congenital anomaly are discussed.

The calculi are considered to have originated as gall-stones which formed the nuclei for f˦coliths formed in the diverticulum.
