Present knowledge on Mecoptera of Ukraine

open access: yesZootaxa, 2022
The first annotated checklist of Mecoptera of Ukraine is presented. Altogether, 11 species of scorpionflies are known with a confirmed or probable occurrence in Ukraine. This list is based on previously published data, as well as on recently collected materials and specimens housed in the collection of the State Museum of Natural History NAS Ukraine ...

The Mecoptera of Michigan [PDF]

open access: yesThe Great Lakes Entomologist, 2017
(excerpt) To date, no one has published on the Mecoptera of Michigan. A comprehensive taxonomic paper on the Mecoptera of Illinois, by Donald W. Webb, Illinois Natural History Survey, and Norman D. Mecoptera

open access: yes, 2023

Biology of the Mecoptera

Annual Review of Entomology, 1983
One of the minor orders of insects, the Mecoptera comprise about 500 known extant species arranged in 32 genera and 9 families (22, 106). They have been of interest to entomologists out of proportion to their small numbers, however, because of their supposed ancestral relationship to the major orders Diptera and Lepidoptera.

Mecoptera is paraphyletic: multiple genes and phylogeny of Mecoptera and Siphonaptera

Zoologica Scripta, 2002
Phylogenetic relationships among members of the Mecoptera and Siphonaptera were inferred from DNA sequence data. Four loci (18S and 28S ribosomal DNA, cytochrome oxidase II and elongation factor‐1α) were sequenced for 69 taxa selected to represent major flea and mecopteran lineages.

On the structure of the cuticle of Mecoptera

Journal of Entomology Series A, General Entomology, 1975
ABSTRACT The chitin architecture of Mecoptera cuticle is of two kinds: helicoidal and helicoidal preferred with the preferred layers being cross‐plied. Comparison of both systems of terminology currently in use to differentiate the subtypes of cuticle indicates that neither provides much information about the arrangement of chitin ...

Ultrastructure of the larval midgut of Bittacus planus (Mecoptera: Bittacidae) and Neopanorpa longiprocessa (Mecoptera: Panorpidae)

Tissue and Cell, 2017
Bittacidae and Panorpidae are the two largest families in Mecoptera. The larvae of Bittacidae are different from those of Panorpidae in external morphology and habits, and have an interesting habit of spraying the body surface with soil through the anus.

New Species of Neopanorpa (Mecoptera) from Vietnam, with a Key to the Species of Mecoptera of Vietnam

Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington, 2017
Abstract. Sixteen species of scorpionflies have been reported from Vietnam, consisting of 13 Neopanorpa and three Bittacus species. One of these scorpionflies from the Central Highlands of Vietnam with hood-shaped hypovalves was determined to be a new species and is described herein as Neopanorpa cucullata, n.sp.

Ultramorphology of the proventriculus in Panorpidae and Bittacidae (Mecoptera)

Micron, 2009
The proventriculus is a specialized part of the foregut in the alimentary canal in some insects, varying greatly in its structure across different insect groups. The ultramorphology of the proventriculus in Mecoptera was investigated in eight species of Panorpidae and one of the Bittacidae using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.
