Summary: Improving a long-standing result of \textit{A. Schönhage, M. Paterson}, and \textit{N. Pippenger} [J. Comput. Syst. Sci. 13, 184-199 (1976; Zbl 0333.68033)] we show that the median of a set containing \(n\) elements can always be found using at most \(c \cdot n\) comparisons, where ...

Abstract Let X 1, …, Xn be identically distributed according to a symmetric distribution F (satisfying suitable regularity conditions). An approximation to the variance of the median is computed up to terms of order 1/n 2 and a corresponding approximation to the efficiency of relative to the average up to terms of order 1/n.

The classical p-median problem is discussed, together with methods for its solution. The multi-median problem, a generalization of the p-median problem in which more than one type of facility is allowed, is introduced and methods of solution developed. Numerical results are presented.

Median power and median correlation theory
IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, 2002We show that the maximum likelihood (ML) estimate of location under the Laplacian model, which forms the basis for weighted median filters, can be generalized to correlation estimates based on weighted medians. Much like linear sample correlations, the resultant median correlation estimates have a surprisingly simple structure.
