Enhancing Surgical Decision‐Making for Infected Cardiac Device Lead Removal With 18F‐FDG PET/CT: A Case Study and Literature Analysis

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Residual implantable cardiac electronic device (ICED) leads pose a significant infection risk, necessitating a multimodal diagnostic and therapeutic approach. This case highlights the critical role of PET/CT imaging in guiding surgical decision‐making, particularly in cases of chronic infections with embedded or fractured lead fragments. While

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery versus Conventional Median Sternotomy for Atrial Septal Defect Closure

open access: yesThe Korean journal of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, 2016
Background Median sternotomy is the standard approach for atrial septal defect (ASD) closure. However, minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) has been introduced at many centers in adult/grown-up congenital heart patients.

A Case of Cerebral Air Embolization During Robot‐Assisted Partial Nephrectomy via a Retroperitoneal Approach for the Patient With Renal Cell Carcinoma

open access: yesIJU Case Reports, Volume 9, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Cerebral air embolism accompanied by right‐to‐left shunt through the venous system during Robot‐assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) is regarded as a rare occurrence, with a high mortality rate. Case Presentation A case of a 77‐year‐old man with renal cell carcinoma who developed cerebral air embolism during right retroperitoneal ...

Neoadjuvant Glucocorticoids Facilitate Resection in Advanced B‐Type Thymomas: A Propensity‐Matched Analysis of Surgical and Survival Outcomes

open access: yesThoracic Cancer, Volume 17, Issue 1, January 2026.
Neoadjuvant glucocorticoids facilitated less invasive and more complete resection of advanced B‐type thymomas, leading to reduced operative morbidity and improved progression‐free survival compared to upfront surgery. This study supports a novel downstaging strategy for this challenging disease.

Enhancing recovery and outcomes of sternal closure in cardiac surgery: Early results of a 400-patient comparison of suture tapes and steel wiresCentral MessagePerspective

open access: yesJTCVS Techniques
Background: Conventional steel wires may be inadequate for patients at high risk of sternal complications. We compared steel wires with a novel sternal closure system involving suture tapes, aiming to reduce sternal complications and enhance ...

Brachial plexus injury following median sternotomy

open access: yesThe Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 1980
Brachial plexus injuries are annoyingly common after median sternotomies and vary from those causing minor symptoms to those producing major disability. We compared two groups of patients operated upon with the arms either abducted to a 90 degree angle or at the sides and found no difference in the incidence of brachial plexus injury.
