Primary Mediastinal Neoplasms (Other Than Thymoma) [PDF]

open access: possibleMayo Clinic Proceedings, 1993
Primary mediastinal neoplasms encompass a long list of histologically diverse lesions that can arise from a wide variety of mediastinal structures. Recent advances in diagnostic techniques have considerably enhanced the evaluation of the mediastinum with use of noninvasive or minimally invasive procedures.

Minimally Invasive Approaches to Mediastinal Neoplasms

Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 2000
The goal of minimal-access surgery is to cause the least trauma necessary to gain exposure for an operative procedure. Application of this principle to mediastinal neoplasms involves the use of small incisions with both mediastinoscopy and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS).

Lymphoproliferative Disorders Presenting as Mediastinal Neoplasms

Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 2000
Lymphoproliferative disorders may present in any organ of the body. The mediastinum is an uncommon location for presentation of these heterogeneous disorders, but involvement of the mediastinum may be the sole site of disease for several aggressive lymphomas. Both Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma may present in the mediastinum.

Pneumonectomy for Idiopathic Fibrosing Mediastinitis Mimicking Neoplasm in a Child

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2022
The unique case of a child with idiopathic fibrosing mediastinitis mimicking neoplasm is presented. A 5-year-old boy presented with pneumonia and was found to have a complex, heterogeneous, and calcified mediastinal mass along the left hilum. Percutaneous and surgical biopsies, while suggesting a potential epithelial malignancy, were non-conclusive ...

Klinefelter’s Syndrome and Mediastinal Germ Cell Neoplasms

Journal of Urology, 1981
We describe 2 patients with Klinefelter's syndrome in whom mediastinal germ cell neoplasms developed. This association also has been noted in the literature in 6 other cases. The pathogenesis of these otherwise rare neoplasms probably is related to the genetic abnormality and the abnormal hormonal status in Klinefelter's syndrome.

Pitfalls in intraoperative frozen section histology of mediastinal neoplasms

European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, 1990
We evaluated the reliability of intraoperative frozen section histology in 149 mediastinal tumours of which 106 lesions were localized in the anterior, 18 in the central and 25 in the posterior mediastinum. Gross non-resectability was ruled out by preoperative imaging. No preoperative cytological or histological diagnosis was obtained in any case.
