Fibrosing mediastinitis is a rare benign disorder caused by proliferation of acellular collagen and fibrous tissue within the mediastinum. Although many cases are idiopathic, many (and perhaps most) cases in the United States are thought to be caused by an abnormal immunologic response to Histoplasma capsulatum infection.

Anaerobic bacteria often are neglected in discussions of the bacteriology of mediastinitis. Two cases of anaerobic mediastinitis are reported and the literature in this field is reviewed. Anaerobes are important pathogens in the etiology of mediastinitis secondary to perforation of the esophagus, extension of a retropharyngeal abscess, or extension of ...

A series of malignant seminomas of the mediastinum is presented and compared with previously reported series. The difficulty of conclusively excluding occult primary gonadal disease is noted. Primary mediastinal seminomas are associated with a better prognosis than teratomas of this site, mainly because of their radiosensitivity.

Mediastinal tumors are comprised of various benign and malignant neoplasms that share the same anatomic location within the thorax. The mediastinum is traditionally divided into three compartments: the anterior, middle, and posterior mediastinum. This division, based on lateral chest radiographs, helps clinicians establish appropriate differential ...
