Trends in Medical Image Compression
Current Medical Imaging Reviews, 2006This paper presents an overview on the state-of-the-art in the field of medical image coding. After a summary of the more representative 2D and 3D compression algorithms, a versatile model-based coding scheme for three- dimensional medical data is introduced.

JPEG Compression in Medical Imaging
2010The use of digital imaging in medical applications has led to significant improvements in the ability to detect and diagnose health problems. Digital imaging provides the opportunity for creative and innovative processing methods that simply would not be possible with analog systems.

Lossless Compression of Threshold-Segmented Medical Images
Journal of Medical Systems, 2011This paper introduces a new algorithm for losslessly compressing voxel-based 3D CT medical images. Firstly, medical data is segmented according to selected ranges of the Hounsfield scale. The data is then arranged into two data streams. The first stream identifies the positions of the remaining data after segmentation. This information is compressed by

Wavelet compression in medical terahertz pulsed imaging
Physics in Medicine and Biology, 2002This paper concerns the robustness of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) compression in terahertz pulsed imaging (TPI). TPI datasets consist of terahertz time-domain series which are sampled at each 'pixel' of the image, leading to file sizes which are typically of the order of several megabytes (MB) per image.

A novel approach to medical image compression
International Journal of Bioinformatics Research and Applications, 2006As medical/biological imaging facilities move towards complete film-less imaging, compression plays a key role. Although lossy compression techniques yield high compression rates, the medical community has been reluctant to adopt these methods, largely for legal reasons, and has instead relied on lossless compression techniques that yield low ...

Lossless compression of medical images
[1991] Computer-Based Medical Systems@m_Proceedings of the Fourth Annual IEEE Symposium, 2002Lossless compression of magnetic resonance images is reviewed using both the theoretical and implementation models. The compression level of selected algorithms (Lempel-Ziv and Huffman) are compared against the first-order, second-order, and conditional entropies.

Morphological skeletonization for medical image compression
[1992] Proceedings Fifth Annual IEEE Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems, 2003The authors introduce a lossless data compression technique based on the morphological skeleton representation. Mathematical morphology is a methodology for image analysis which provides a means for describing the geometrical structure of an image quantitatively.

Quality assessment of compressed medical images
IET International Conference on Visual Information Engineering (VIE 2006), 2006This paper describes the compression of grayscale medical images using set partitioning in hierarchical trees. A novel denoising technique in the wavelet transform domain for multiplicative noise is presented and is used prior to the SPIHT. This algorithm is more effective in terms of the quality, time and computational cost.

Medical image compression by sampling DCT coefficients
IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine, 2002Advanced medical imaging requires storage of large quantities of digitized clinical data. Due to the constrained bandwidth and storage capacity, however, a medical image must be compressed before transmission and storage. Among the existing compression schemes, transform coding is one of the most effective strategies.
