The increasing demand for seafood and a stagnation of the worldwide capture fisheries create pressure on aquaculture to fill the widening gap between the demand and supply. Aquaculture is already providing 50% of the aquatic food we consume. Seafood makes an important part of the healthy Mediterranean diet.

This study aimed at the development of demersal trawl design, for the Mediterranean fisheries, with reduced fuel consumption. The new design include the use of a new high strength material and the use of larger meshes in net areas where no negative effect on the catching power is foreseen.
