An Ensemble Machine Learning Approach for Tropical Cyclone Localization and Tracking From ERA5 Reanalysis Data

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, 2023
Tropical Cyclones (TCs) are counted among the most destructive phenomena that can be found in nature. Every year, globally an average of 90 TCs occur over tropical waters, and global warming is making them stronger and more destructive.

Projected 21st Century Changes in Precipitation and Temperature Over Italy Using CMIP6 CMCC‐CM2‐SR5 Model and COSMO‐CLM Dynamical Downscaling

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 46, Issue 6, May 2026.
This study evaluates the COSMO‐CLM regional climate model over Italy under CMIP6 scenarios. Compared to its driving global model, COSMO‐CLM reduces temperature biases by 50%–75% and better represents precipitation and extremes, adding critical mesoscale detail.

Functional traits predict changes in floral phenology under climate change in a highly diverse Mediterranean community

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 5, Page 1270-1285, May 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Plants are shifting their flowering phenology in response to climate change, but trends differ between species and communities. Functional traits can largely explain how different species respond to climate change by shifting their phenology, and can therefore help ...

Simulating drying and human impacts on river networks to evaluate biological quality indices performance through the lens of metacommunity theory

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 5, May 2026.
This work constitutes a first step towards developing simulation‐based assessments that incorporate catchment drying patterns to support biomonitoring of drying river networks. Our approach can inform stakeholders when current methods are likely to fail and contribute to decision‐making on whether adapting current methods is possible or developing new ...

Mediterraneo capovolto.

Outcomes in Patients Requiring Veno‐Venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation After Cardiac Surgery: An Analysis From the PELS‐1 Study

open access: yesArtificial Organs, Volume 50, Issue 5, Page 745-754, May 2026.
We report an insight from the PELS‐1– a multicentre, international registry focusing on postocardiotomy extracorporeal support use between 2000 and 2020. We focused on 24/2163 (1.1%) patients requiring V‐V ECMO after cardiac surgery. Mortality was high, with 21.7% of patients discharged alive and an overall 1‐year survival probability of 12.5 ...

Profiling of HCAR1 signalling reveals Gαi/o and Gαs activation without β‐arrestin recruitment and the discovery of an allosteric agonist

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 183, Issue 10, Page 2219-2235, May 2026.
Abstract Background and Purpose Lactate, historically viewed as a metabolic by‐product, has emerged as a signalling molecule via the G protein–coupled receptor Hydroxycarboxylic Acid Receptor 1 (HCAR1). The receptor is primarily expressed in adipocytes but also found in various other tissues.
