TBK1‐Associated Primary Lateral Sclerosis Followed by Right Temporal Variant Frontotemporal Dementia

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We report a 58‐year‐old woman with a novel splice‐site variant in the TANK‐binding kinase 1 (TBK1:c.993–2A>C p.Ala332TyrfsTer39) who sequentially developed primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) followed by right temporal variant frontotemporal dementia (rtvFTD). Neuroimaging demonstrated right anterior temporal atrophy before cognitive symptoms, and

Experimental evidence for “double-edged sword” effect of the fibrous δ-ferrite on mechanical properties: a case study of Fe-5.95Mn-1.55Si-1.0Al-0.055C medium-Mn steel

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2022
An ingenious thermo-mechanical treatment process was utilized on a Fe-5.95Mn-1.55Si-1.0Al-0.055C medium-Mn steel to investigate the effect of fibrous δ-ferrites on mechanical properties.

Possible role of Geobacter sulfurreducens in anaerobic corrosion of steels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Geobacteraceae are the most widespread microorganisms in soils and sediments in which microbial reduction of Fe(III) is an important process, either in the natural degradation of organic compounds or in their bioremediation.

Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser surface texturing significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) for marine applications. Optimal laser parameters reduce corrosion by 80% and enhance tensile strength by 25% and ductility by 15%.

On the Elevated Temperature Thermal Stability of Nanoscale Mn-Ni-Si Precipitates Formed at Lower Temperature in Highly Irradiated Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Atom probe tomography (APT) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) techniques were used to probe the long-time thermal stability of nm-scale Mn-Ni-Si precipitates (MNSPs) formed in intermediate and high Ni reactor pressure vessel steels ...

Investigation of diesel generator shaft and bearing failures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
A shaft failure in a 634 kW diesel generator after 4000 hours of operation required investigation, especially when similar sets began to show signs of excessive bearing housing wear.

Low‐Cost, Large‐Scale Nanoporous Metals by Mechanical Alloying, Oxide Reduction, and Dealloying of Powders

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Powder metal processing provides scalable advantages in nanoporous (np) metal development. Mechanical alloying is used to produce unique precursors for hybrid nanopore formation by oxide reduction and dealloying. As demonstrated in np Ag, this approach improves process efficiency while promoting smaller ligaments and larger pores, both of which are ...

The repair of foundry defects in steel castings using welding technology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Use of welding technology for the repair of steel castings is particularly common in two areas. These include weld surfacing of protrusions that remained incomplete after casting, or filling the surface defects (cavities).

Innovative Processing of Compacted Waste Aluminum Alloy Powders via Controlled Remelting and Solidification

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates an efficient recycling route for out‐of‐spec AlSi10Mg atomized powders through compaction and arc remelting followed by suction casting. By correlating compaction load, cooling rate, and resulting microstructure, we show that intermediate pressures (50–80 kN) and rapid cooling refine dendrites, reduce porosity, and enhance ...
