1966年11月に日本で MEDLARS 収録用雑誌論文の索引作成作業を開始してから今日までの入力論文数は6万件を越えている。現在の索引対象雑誌数は127, 入力対象論文の約75%は日本語で, 24%が英語で書かれている。雑誌受け入れから索引作成後加 Index Medicus として日本に到着するまでの所要期間は約2ヵ月, 入力対象論文の主題範囲は収録誌リストの主題索引の件名標目数で38主題にわたっている。索引作業に用いられる tool 類は, 各種のMeSHを初めとして特定主題の索引作成のための典拠図書まで入れると, 主なものだけで20点を越える。索引作成者の平均作業従事年数はNLMの5~20年に比し僅か2年であり, その内の一ヵ年は養成期間であるから ...
