The Great Pyramid in Egypt and Stonehenge in England were both built in the third millennium BC from vast stones weighing up to 40 t. These and many other contemporary monuments to man's ingenuity could only have been achieved with an efficient means of transporting and raising the megaliths from which they are made.

The discovery of the first alignment of large stones in 1990 came as a complete surprise. It is not clear why we failed to recognize them previously, or rather why we failed to understand their significance during the first three field seasons (1974,1975 and 1977) at Nabta.
