Behavioral responses of humpback whales, Megaptera novaeangliae (Cetacea: Balaenopteridae), to satellite transmitter deployment procedures

open access: yesZoologia (Curitiba), 2010
Tagging whales with implantable satellite transmitters creates the possibility of disturbing the animals. Between 2003 and 2005, behavioral observations of humpback whales during tag deployment operations were conducted off the coast of Brazil from the ...

Ecology and Seasonal Habitat Use of Northern Bottlenose and Sowerby's Beaked Whales in the Azores

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Beaked whales are among the least known cetaceans, yet they are regularly observed in the Azores, a region recognized as a hotspot for deep‐diving species. In this study, we analyzed opportunistic sightings collected during 1492 whale‐watching trips, including 149 beaked whale encounters, of which 89 were Sowerby's (Mesoplodon bidens) and 31 ...

Possible Distress Sounds from a Stranded Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae)

open access: yesAquatic Mammals, 2017
This note describes the sound production by a stranded humpback whale off the coast of Uruguay (35° S) in the Rio de la Plata estuary. No previous study of humpback whale sounds in Uruguayan waters exists, potentially due to the open sea habitat of Uruguay and the even rarer occurrence of a stranding.

Paternity of Western Gray Whales Feeding Off Sakhalin Island, Russia

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT While understanding mating systems can provide critical insight into a population's long‐term persistence and resilience, such information remains limited for most baleen whales. However, extensive research on the western gray whales that feed off Sakhalin Island, Russia, led to the collection of biopsy samples from 75% of the 207 whales photo‐

Satellite tracking reveals novel migratory patterns and the importance of seamounts for endangered South Pacific humpback whales [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The humpback whale population of New Caledonia appears to display a novel migratory pattern characterized by multiple directions, long migratory paths and frequent pauses over seamounts and other shallow geographical features.

A Multi‐Taxa Approach to Estuarine Biomonitoring: Assessing Vertebrate Biodiversity and Ecological Continuity Using Environmental DNA Metabarcoding in the Rance River (Brittany, France)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2026.
We applied eDNA metabarcoding to assess vertebrate diversity in the Rance Estuary, France, across five stations spanning marine to freshwater environments, including areas upstream and downstream of a tidal power plant dam. A total of 124 vertebrate MOTUs were detected, with community composition reflecting the estuarine gradient and species turnover ...

A 26‐Year Record of Seasonality and Interannual Variability in Marine Mammal Sightings From Northern Marguerite Bay, Antarctica

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2026.
Whales and seals are an important and often conspicuous component of the Southern Ocean pelagic fauna but data from winter are very sparse. Six species remain in Marguerite Bay, Antarctica, year‐round while three are seasonal visitors. Humpback Whales are summer visitors and show a long‐term increase in sighting frequency together with an earlier ...

Quantifying humpback whale song sequences to understand the dynamics of song exchange at the ocean basin scale [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Humpback whales have a continually evolving vocal sexual display, or "song," that appears to undergo both evolutionary and "revolutionary" change. All males within a population adhere to the current content and arrangement of the song. Populations within

Predicting spatiotemporal persistence of rare species: An example with North Atlantic right whales

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Knowledge of when species remain in specified areas is essential for survey design, conservation, and management. Using species occurrence data to predict persistence in space and time (i.e., presence of one or more individuals of the species of interest within a defined spatial area over a duration of a specified number of days) may be ...
