Biodiversity Buffers Phytoplankton Biomass Production Against Nanoparticle Pollution Through Increased Facilitation

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 28, Issue 11, November 2025.
Biodiversity can buffer ecosystems against environmental stressors, yet its role under nanoparticle pollution remains unclear. Using freshwater phytoplankton communities exposed to copper oxide nanoparticles, we show that higher species richness alleviates productivity losses through increased facilitation among species.

Observation of Decadal Natural Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement in the South China Sea

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 17, 16 September 2025.
Abstract Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) is a process of artificially increasing the alkalinity of seawater, chemically allowing the ocean to permanently absorb more carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and reverse some of the chemical changes resulting from CO2‐induced acidification. However, the long‐term real impacts of OAE on ocean carbonate

Pteropods as early‐warning indicators of ocean acidification

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 70, Issue 6, Page 1651-1665, June 2025.
Abstract Aragonite undersaturation (Ωar < 1) events are projected to rapidly increase in frequency and duration in the Antarctic Weddell Sea by 2050. Thecosome pteropods (pelagic snails) are bioindicators of ocean acidification (OA) because their aragonite shell dissolves easily at low Ωar saturation states.

Mechanism of Action and Beneficial Effects of Probiotics in Amateur and Professional Athletes

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 1, January 2025.
Probiotic supplements during exercise improve athlete performance. Probiotics boost immunity, ease GI issues, and enhance gut permeability in athletes. This approach (probiotic supplementation) aids gut health and boosts immune function. ABSTRACT Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, provide health benefits to ...

The impact of aragonite saturation variability on shelled pteropods: An attribution study in the California Current System

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 6, June 2024.
Observational evidence from the California Current System indicates that the long‐term ocean acidification trend is severely damaging shelled pteropods, an indicator species for ocean health. This damage is linked to their vertical migration, which exposes them to more damaging conditions at depth.
