This paper explores an under-theorised phenomenon – the experience of melancholy as an enhancer of happiness. Drawing from philosophy and literature, I define melancholy as an experience that combines the pleasure of feeling sad with sober self-reflection.

AbstractKleist's 'tragic vision' is here related to the great historical tradition of melancholy, and specifically to the iconography established by Durer's Melencolia I. In readings of Der Findling, Die Verlobung in St. Domingo, and Michael Kohlhaas, the characters' perplexity is seen to culminate in melancholy.

Wordsworth assembles the ‘spots of time’ into a version of tradition that, even as it focuses on the poet’s biography, parallels Burke’s model of British tradition and represents an alternative to it. Positing poetry as the reconciliation of spirit and matter, Wordsworth thus preserves the idea that division and alienation can be overcome.
