Monitoring Environmental Changes in the Shatt al-Arab River Using the Organic Pollution Index (OPI) and Two Species of Benthic Invertebrates Melanoides tuberculata and Neritina violacea

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries
The current study seeked to monitor five selected stations in the Shatt al-Arab River using the organic pollution index (OPI) and the presence and abundance of two species of snails, Melanoides tuberculata and Neritina violacea.

Novel Mito‐Nuclear Combinations Facilitate the Global Invasion of a Major Agricultural Crop Pest

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 11, Issue 34, September 11, 2024.
Here, the study describes a novel invasion mechanism displayed by fall armyworm that facilitates its expansion and establishment in new environments. The rice strain used increases energy metabolism, faster wing‐beat frequencies, and lower wing loadings to drive greater flight performance, while corn stran adapts with more relaxed mitochondria and ...

Use of a geospatial tool to predict the distribution of Melanoides tuberculata (Müller, 1774) and some native freshwater gastropods found in Brazil

open access: yesBiota Neotropica
: One of the most common environmental impacts that has caused irreversible effects on ecosystems is the introduction of exotic species. In addition to the ecological disasters that can be caused, such as the decline and extinction of native species ...

Long‐term climate and hydrologic regimes shape stream invertebrate community responses to a hurricane disturbance

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 93, Issue 7, Page 823-835, July 2024.
Aridity and local climate predictably affect the susceptibility of stream invertebrates to hurricane disturbances. Abstract Disturbances can produce a spectrum of short‐ and long‐term ecological consequences that depend on complex interactions of the characteristics of the event, antecedent environmental conditions, and the intrinsic properties of ...

Disentangling late quaternary fluvial and climatic drivers of palaeohydrological change in the Najaf Sea basin, Western Iraq

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 49, Issue 4, Page 1451-1467, 30 March 2024.
This first geochronological study of the Najaf Basin shows that the basin likely formed shortly before 26 ka BP, with significant fluvial activity in the Wadi al Milh c. 26–18 ka BP. There is no evidence for raised water levels during the early Holocene humid period.

The molluscicidal activity of niclosamide (Bayluscide WP70®) on Melanoides tuberculata (Thiaridae), a snail associated with habitats of Biomphalaria glabrata (Planorbidae)

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2002
The aim of this study was to determine the toxicity of niclosamide (Bayluscide ®) on Melanoides tuberculata and Biomphalaria glabrata under laboratory conditions. The latter species is the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni (Sambon 1917).
