In this study we have analyzed pigment translocation in cultured melanophores from the cold-tempered Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua. The transport process was found to be cold-adapted, as it proceeded at low temperatures.

Mechanism of melanophore dispersion
Biochemical Pharmacology, 1964Abstract The mechanism of the melanophore reaction of the skin of Hyla arborea (tree frog) has been studied. Apart from the specific hormones MSH and ACTH which elicit melanophore dispersion, the following substances produced darkening: theophylline and caffeine regularly, theobromine erratically, but not, however, dyphylline.

Calcium Requirement for Melanophore-Stimulating Hormone Action on Melanophores
Science, 1971The calcium ion is specifically required for the action of melanophore-stimulating hormone on melanosome dispersion within lizard ( Anolis carolinensis ) melanophores in vitro. The response to this hormone is directly related to the concentration of the Ca 2+ ion.

Stimulation of melanophores and guanophores by melanophore-stimulating hormone peptides
General and Comparative Endocrinology, 1964Abstract Both melanophores and guanophores are under the control of hypophysial chromatotropic hormone (CTH, MSH, MDH, intermedin, etc.). This principle induces melanophore expansion and guanophore contraction. In order to compare the structural requirements of CTH for both melanophore and guanophore responses, the efficacy of various MSH peptides on

The action of reserpine on teleost melanophores
European Journal of Pharmacology, 1973Abstract Reserpine caused darkening of both pencil fish and angelfish, this effect lasted for at least 10 and 25 days respectively. The aggregation of pigment granules within the melanophores evoked by stimulation of the nerves supplying the melanophores was inhibited by reserpine in both species.

Action of melanophore-stimulating hormone on melanophores of the cyprinid fish Zacco temmincki
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Comparative Pharmacology, 19821. Alpha MSH was extremely effective in inducing melanosome dispersion in both innervated and denervated melanophores in isolated scales of Zacco termmincki. 2. The sensitivity of the melanophores to MSH did not change after denervation. 3. The MSH action was blocked by mersalyl, a SH inhibitor, but not by any of alpha and beta adrenergic blockers.

Ionic requirements for melanophore stimulating hormone (MSH) action on melanophores
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1979Abstract 1. 1. Calcium is required for melanophore stimulating hormone (MSH) action on melanophores of the lizard, Anolis carolinensis , the toad, Scaphiopus couchi , and the frog Rana berlandieri forrei . 2. 2. Ca 2+ is required for an initial mechanism of MSH action, but not for melanosome dispersion per se , since melanophores respond

Modeling of pattern regulation in melanophores
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2007Melanosomes, pigment granules in melanophores, play a principal role in physiological color adaptation of fish and frog. Melanophores regulate melanosome trafficking on cytoskeletal filaments to generate a range of spatiotemporal patterns. Here, we present the first comprehensive model of spatiotemporal evolution of melanosome patterns.

Melanophore differentiation in leaf frogs
Developmental Biology, 1978Abstract In melanosomes of Pachymedusa (Agalychnis) dacnicolor and other leaf frogs, the pteridine dimer, pterorhodin, is found in fibers concentric to a kernel of eumelanin. The kernel is a remnant mature larval melanosome that is renovated at metamorphic climax and on which pterorhodin is deposited at the completion of metamorphosis.
