Ultrastructure of human melanosis coli with reference to its pathogenesis
Colonic mucosal biopsies from patients with melanosis coli were examined by electron microscopy. They showed apoptosis of colonic surface epithelial cells and phagocytosis of resulting apoptotic bodies by intraepithelial macrophages.
