Sequence and RFLP analysis of the ITS2 ribosomal DNA in two Neotropical social bees, Melipona beecheii and Melipona yucatanica (Apidae, Meliponini)

Insectes Sociaux, 2007
Two stingless bees species of the genus Melipona, M. beecheii and M. yucatanica, are the only ones reported for the Yucatan Peninsula. The natural distribution of M. beecheii ranges from southern Mexico to Costa Rica, that of M. yucatanica from south Mexico to Guatemala.

Behavioural development and abdomen inflation of gynes and newly mated queens of Melipona beecheii (Apidae, Meliponinae)

Insectes Sociaux, 1999
The behaviour of gynes of Melipona beecheii in queen-deprived colonies was studied. The period after emergence until acceptance is characterized by agonistic behaviour of workers towards the gynes. The gynes escaped from this worker aggression by hiding in the periphery of the nest, by performing rapid turn-arounds once grabbed by a worker, and ...

Mandibular Gland Secretion of Melipona beecheii: Chemistry and Behavior

Journal of Chemical Ecology, 2005
The mandibular gland secretion of Melipona beecheii contains a rich mixture of terpenoid and oxygenated compounds and unsaturated and saturated hydrocarbons. However, it differs markedly from the 11 other Brazilian species examined in previous studies, both by the absence of 2-heptanol and the presence of rose oxides.

Extinction ofMelipona beecheiiand traditional beekeeping in the Yucatán peninsula

Bee World, 2005
Rearing of the ‘xunan-kab’ bee (Melipona beecheii) had been practised widely by the Mayans of the Yucatan peninsula long before arrival of the Spanish in the New World, and had been a culturally and economically important activity in that region. Melipona beecheii is kept almost exclusively in traditional log hives.

In vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of Melipona beecheii honey protein fractions

Journal of Food Measurement and Characterization, 2018
Proteins extracted from Melipona beecheii honey were assessed for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity by in vitro assays. Protein content was 3.56 mg/mL and after reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography fractionation eight distinctive peaks were detected with molecular weight ranged from 7.04 to 95.35 kDa.

Nest and colony characteristics of log-hivedMelipona beecheii(Apidae: Meliponinae)

Journal of Apicultural Research, 1999
SUMMARYThe log hives of 19 colonies of the stingless bee Melipona beecheii were opened and adult and brood populations, stored nectar and pollen, and other nest characteristics were recorded. Adult populations were found to be between 500 and 2500.

Patterns of intranidal temperature fluctuation forMelipona beecheiicolonies in natural nesting cavities

Journal of Apicultural Research, 2000
SUMMARYIntranidal temperature fluctuation was studied in colonies of Melipona beecheii, an economically important stingless bee from Yucatan, Mexico. Two feral colonies nesting in tree cavities were used in the experiments. The brood and storage pots inside the nests were monitored for temperature changes using a telethermometer.
