Review of Scaura Schwarz, 1938 (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponini)

Scaura Schwarz is a small, widely distributed Neotropical genus of stingless bees whose workers and males have the metabasitarsus as broad as or wider than the metatibia. The genus currently includes four valid species. A species complex composed of three additional species are described here as new (S. amazonica sp. n., S. aspera sp. n.

Colony reproduction in Tetragonisca angustula (Apidae, Meliponini)

Colony multiplication of the neotropical stingless bee Tetragonisca angustula started with the finding of a new nesting site by scout bees, followed by the cleaning of the cavity. Cerumen was flown in from the mother colony for the sealing of crevices and the construction of an entrance tube.

Trap-nests for stingless bees (Hymenoptera, Meliponini)

Most stingless bee species build their nests inside tree hollows. In this paper, we present trap-nest containers which simulate nesting cavities so as to attract swarms of stingless bees. Although regularly used by stingless bee beekeepers in Brazil, this technique to obtain new colonies has not yet been systematically studied.

Deceptive orchids with meliponini as pollinators

Visitation of orchids by Meliponini (stingless bees) is confirmed only in 13 Melipona, Partamona and Trigona, for Xylobium and Maxillaria, with the addition of Trigona fulviventris visiting Ionopsis. Some bees evinced multiple floral visitation by carrying several stipes and viscidia from pollinaria, thus may cause seed set.
