The Large Carpenter Bees (Xylocopa, Apidae) of the Neotropical Region: Phylogenetics, Classification and Biogeography

open access: yesZoologica Scripta, Volume 54, Issue 6, Page 884-896, November 2025.
ABSTRACT The large carpenter bees of the genus Xylocopa comprise almost 400 species distributed worldwide. Their large body and ability to build nests through woodworking make them one of the most remarkable groups of bees. In the Neotropics, they comprise over 100 species occurring in tropical and subtropical environments including islands in the ...

Colony strength and queen replacement in Melipona marginata (Apidae: Meliponini) [PDF]

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2005
Physogastric queens of Melipona marginata were removed from their colonies in order to verify the acceptance of a new queen by workers. Colony strength was evaluated according to queen oviposition rate and comb diameters. Replacement was observed seven times.

Evolution of Phospholipase A2 in Bees and Flies

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 10, October 2025.
This study investigated the evolution of the PLA2 gene in bees and flies and compared the evolutionary rate between them, which denotes the toxic group and the non‐toxic group. The results showed that PLA2 was under purifying selection and that an accelerated evolution of PLA2 occurred in the toxic group when compared with the non‐toxic group ...

First report of the use of extrafloral nectaries of Bauhinia forficata Link (Fabales: Fabaceae) by Tetragonisca angustula Latreille (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

open access: yesRevista Chilena de Entomología, 2019
We report here for the first time the use of extrafloral nectaries of Bauhinia forficata Link by Tetragonisca angustula (Latreille, 1811). This behavior was observed in an urban area in southern Brazil during the afternoon between December 2018 and ...

An Introduction to Simple Saccharides and Oligosaccharides, and a Decadal Review of Their Analysis in Food by Ion Chromatography and Ion Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 10, October 2025.
Graphical Abstract of Factors Affecting the Saccharides Content of Fruits and Vegetables, for Analysis ABSTRACT This paper provides a decadal review of literature describing the analysis of simple saccharides and oligosaccharides in food by ion chromatography pulsed amperometric detection (IC/PAD) and ion chromatography mass spectrometry (IC/MS) as ...

Hygienic behavior in Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides (Apidae, Meliponini) [PDF]

open access: yesApidologie, 2017
Hygienic behavior in stingless bees is a trait of workers that confers colony-level resistance against some brood diseases. Workers of hygienic colonies detect, uncap and remove dead or diseased brood from the nest cells. We examined the hygienic behavior in stingless bees (Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides) from freeze-killed brood assay using ...

The role and significance of stingless bees (Hymenoptera: Apiformes: Meliponini) in the natural environment

open access: yesEnvironmental Protection and Natural Resources, 2019
This article refers to the biology and ecology of stingless bees (Meliponini), living in tropical and subtropical areas. Similar to honey bees (Apis mellifera), stingless bees (Meliponini) belong to the category of proper social insects and are at the ...

The mitochondrial genome of the stingless bee Melipona bicolor (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Meliponini): sequence, gene organization and a unique tRNA translocation event conserved across the tribe Meliponini

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 2008
At present a complete mtDNA sequence has been reported for only two hymenopterans, the Old World honey bee, Apis mellifera and the sawfly Perga condei. Among the bee group, the tribe Meliponini (stingless bees) has some distinction due to its Pantropical

More than fruity scents: Pollination biology, scent, and spectral reflectance of Annonaceae species

open access: yesPlant Species Biology, Volume 40, Issue 5, Page 403-425, September 2025.
We characterised the floral visual and olfactory cues of numerous Annonaceae species and reported their pollinators. We further assessed the olfactory space of most Annonaceae species available in the literature. Abstract The family Annonaceae possesses a broad array of floral phenotypes and pollination specializations, and are important in the plant ...
