Differential resistance across paternal genotypes of honey bee brood to the pathogenic bacteriumMelissococcus plutonius [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, 2023
Melissococcus plutonius is a pathogenic bacterium affecting immature stages of the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) and leads to European foulbrood (EFB) disease.

Preliminary investigations into possible resistance to oxytetracycline in Melissococcus plutonius, a pathogen of honeybee larvae

Letters in Applied Microbiology, 2003
To investigate the occurrence of oxytetracycline (OTC) resistance in Melissococcus plutonius, which causes European foulbrood in honeybee colonies.Strains of M. plutonius were isolated from diseased colonies in England and Wales and tested for resistance to OTC. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of OTC was also determined for selected isolates.

Spatial distribution ofMelissococcus plutoniusin adult honey bees collected from apiaries and colonies with and without symptoms of European foulbrood [PDF]

open access: yesApidologie, 2007
In Switzerland, the incidence of European foulbrood (EFB), caused by the Gram-positive bacterium Melissococcus plutonius, has increased dramatically between 1997 and 2005 but the epidemiology, including the transmission of M. plutonius, remains poorly

Distribution of Melissococcus plutonius in Honeybee Colonies with and without Symptoms of European Foulbrood

Microbial Ecology, 2005
A sensitive hemi-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used for detection of Melissococcus plutonius, the causative agent of European foulbrood (EFB). Sampling was made in Switzerland, where EFB is a widespread disease and incidences have increased in recent years.

Different impacts of pMP19 on the virulence of Melissococcus plutonius strains with different genetic backgrounds

Environmental Microbiology, 2020
Summary Virulence factors responsible for bacterial pathogenicity are often encoded by plasmids. In Melissococcus plutonius , the causative agent of European foulbrood of honey bees, a putative virulence plasmid (pMP19) possessing mtxA

Detection and identification of Melissococcus plutonius in stingless bees (Apidae: Meliponini) from Brazil

Journal of Invertebrate Pathology
European Foulbrood (EFB), caused by the bacterium Melissococcus plutonius, primarily affects young bee larvae, which may lead to colony decline. Once thought to affect only western honey bee Apis mellifera, EFB is now spreading to other bee species in Brazil. We identified EFB and detected M.

High prevalence and strain diversity of Melissococcus plutonius in Apis cerana in Guangxi, China

Journal of Invertebrate Pathology
Melissococcus plutonius, the agent of European foulbrood (EFB), has been well studied in Apis mellifera but its epidemiology in Apis cerana remains less understood. We surveyed 37 apiaries across Guangxi, China, and detected M. plutonius in 32.4%, 10.8%, and 27.0% of larvae, adult bees, and honey samples, respectively, all originating from asymptomatic

The occurrence of Melissococcus plutonius in healthy colonies of Apis mellifera and the efficacy of European foulbrood control measures

Journal of Invertebrate Pathology, 2010
European foulbrood (EFB) persists in England and Wales despite current treatment methods, all of which include feeding honey bee colonies with the antibiotic oxytetracycline (OTC). A large-scale field experiment was conducted to monitor a husbandry-based method, using comb replacement (known as Shook swarm), as a drug free EFB control option.

Prevalence, typing and phylogenetic analysis of Melissococcus plutonius strains from bee colonies of the State of Chihuahua, Mexico

Journal of Invertebrate Pathology, 2018
European foulbrood (EFB) caused by Melissococcus plutonius is an important bee brood disease but, in Mexico, information about this bacterium is limited. We evaluated the prevalence of typical and atypical strains in beehives of seven apicultural regions of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico.
