Somatotroph Pituitary Tumors in Budgerigars ( Melopsittacus undulatus ) [PDF]
A series of 11 pituitary tumors in budgerigars were classified on the basis of their clinical, gross, microscopic, and immunohistochemical characteristics. Affected birds were young to middle-aged. Clinically, neurologic signs—including difficulties flying, ataxia, and blindness—were most commonly reported.

The preservation of bony structures which enclose the hearing organs (ECD) provide a basis for interpreting the hearing capabilities of the extinct, flightless Dromornithidae (Aves). Although the length of the dromornithid ECD was especially short, relative to basicranial length, it conformed to the negative allometric scaling relationships observed in

Personality Traits in the Budgerigar, Melopsittacus undulatus [PDF]
This study investigated bold-shy personality in the budgerigar, Melopsittacus undulatus . Adult budgerigars (14 females, 9 males) fed either a control diet, or one supplemented with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), were subjected to seven behavioral tests ...

Papovavirus‐like infection in budgerigars (Melopsittacus Undulatus) [PDF]
Outbreaks of a disease in two budgerigar aviaries caused 20% and 53% mortality respectively in recently hatched chicks during the 1985 breeding season. Clinical signs were first observed at 5 to 7 days of age. In most birds darkening of the normal skin colour was followed by death in 2 to 10 days.

ABSTRACT Cryopreservation, biobanking, and in vitro propagation of cells from endangered species represent key strategies for advancing biodiversity conservation. The Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), a flagship avian species of the Brazilian Pantanal, is among the critically vulnerable taxa that stand to benefit significantly from such ...

Endogenous Amino Acids in Budgerigars(Melopsittacus undulatus).
To determine the amount of endogenous amino acids in budgerigars (sekiseiinko, Melopsittacus undulatus), as the first step of evaluating amino acid requirements, three experiments were conducted. In Experiments 1 and 2, transit time of the feeds through the digestive tract in budgerigars was studied.

How Do Oriental Reed Warblers Recognize Cuckoo Eggs?
The cognitive basis and underlying mechanisms of the host egg rejection behavior remain not well understood. Egg recognition experiments using three egg mimicry levels (non, poorly, and highly mimetic eggs) to observe Oriental reed warbler (Acrocephalus orientalis) behavior at three breeding stages (pre‐egg‐laying, single host egg, and multiple host ...

Morphological and molecular characterization of Giardia isolated from the straw-necked ibis (Threskiornis spinicollis) in Western Australia [PDF]
Following the first report of avian Giardia infection in Australia, isolates of the parasite recovered from naturally infected straw-necked ibis (Theskiornis spinicollis) were characterized using median body morphology, scanning electron microscopy ...

New records of Ascaridia platyceri (Nematoda) in parrots (Psittaciformes)
The aim of the study was to determine the range of species of ascarids in parrots in the CzechRepublic. Ascarids were found during post-mortem parasitological examination of 38 psittaciform birds belonging to 15 different species. All ascarids found were

Only 1541 (34.2%) of 4503 recognized non‐passerine bird species are held in ZIMS institutions worldwide. Approximately ~83% of the species kept globally are classified as non‐threatened and ~16% as threatened. To improve the conservation of threatened birds, a shift toward keeping threatened species should be considered within ex situ management ...
