Activating Membranes [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2014
We present a general dynamical theory of a membrane coupled to an actin cortex containing polymerizing filaments with active stresses and currents, and demonstrate that active membrane dynamics [Phys. Rev. Lett \textbf{84}, 3494 (2000)] and spontaneous shape oscillations emerge from this description. We also consider membrane instabilities and patterns

Enhancing Ion Transfer in Overlimiting Electrodialysis of Dilute Solutions by Modifying the Surface of Heterogeneous Ion-Exchange Membranes

open access: yesInternational Journal of Chemical Engineering, 2012
The desalination of dilute NaCl solutions with heterogeneous Russian commercial and modified ion-exchange membranes was studied in a laboratory cell imitating desalination channels of large-scale electrodialysers.

A Facile Route for Preparation of High-Performance Hierarchical Porous Carbons for Supercapacitor Electrodes

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electrochemical Science, 2016
In this work, a facile route for preparation of high-performance hierarchical porous carbons from starch was described. The hierarchical porous carbons with developed micropores and mesopores were prepared, and the pore size was distributed at 2, 9 and ...

Membrane Fusion [PDF]

open access: yesCell, 2003
Membrane fusion, one of the most fundamental processes in life, occurs when two separate lipid membranes merge into a single continuous bilayer. Fusion reactions share common features, but are catalyzed by diverse proteins. These proteins mediate the initial recognition of the membranes that are destined for fusion and pull the membranes close together

Self‐Aggregation‐Induced Polymerization for Constructing Multifunctional Dynamic Zwitterionic Hydrogels

open access: yesAggregate
Zwitterionic hydrogels have attracted considerable attention as advanced biomaterials. However, the fabrication of traditional zwitterionic hydrogels typically relies on harsh polymerization conditions, and their backbone structures are non‐biodegradable.

Membranous nephropathy

open access: yesJournal of Nephrology, 2007
Abstract Membranous nephropathy (MN) is a glomerular disease characterized by proteinuria, usually in a nephrotic range, and variable natural course. The etiology is unknown in many cases, while in some patients, MN may be secondary to infection, to other diseases, or to exposure to drugs and toxic substances.

Membrane Heterogeneity Beyond the Plasma Membrane [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2020
The structure and organization of cellular membranes have received intense interest, particularly in investigations of the raft hypothesis. The vast majority of these investigations have focused on the plasma membrane of mammalian cells, yielding significant progress in understanding membrane heterogeneity in terms of lipid composition, molecular ...
