The effect of modulating membrane lipid composition on the thermal sensitivity of tumour cells in culture [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
The plasma membrane, which separates intracellular contents from extra cellular milieu, consists of a lipid bilayer comprising mainly phospholipids and cholesterol together with various functional proteins, which control the interaction of the cell with ...

Lipid phase separation impairs membrane thickness sensing by the Bacillus subtilis sensor kinase DesK

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
Membrane fluidity and thickness have emerged as crucial factors for the activity of and resistance to several antimicrobials. However, the lack of tools to study membrane fluidity and, in particular, thickness in living bacteria limits our understanding ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

7th International Weber Symposium on Innovative Fluorescence Methodologies in Biochemistry and Medicine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Membrane fluidity modulation appears to be an important mechanism facilitating yeast environmental adaptation. To elucidate underlying processes that may contribute to fluidity modulation we compared responses in yeasts mutants lacking the lipid ...

Effects of ytterbium ion on the growth, metabolism and membrane fluidity of Tetrahymena thermophila [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Power-time curves and metabolic properties of Tetrahymena thermophila BF5 exposed to different Yb3+ stop levels were studied by ampoule method of isothermal calorimetry at 28 degrees C.

Maintaining sidedness and fluidity in cell membrane coatings supported on nano-particulate and planar surfaces

open access: yesBioactive Materials
Supported cell membrane coatings meet many requirements set to bioactive nanocarriers and materials, provided sidedness and fluidity of the natural membrane are maintained upon coating.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Isoeugenol has a non-Disruptive Detergent-like Mechanism of Action

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2015
Isoeugenol is an essential oil constituent of nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon. Despite isoeugenol’s promising antimicrobial activity, no studies have yet investigated its mode of antibacterial action at the molecular level.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Acclimatory response to environmental temperature in two species of marine crab: the stenothermal cancer pagurus and the eurythermal carcinus maenas [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
Temperature acclimation effects on leg muscle plasma membrane composition and biophysical state, neuromuscular function and whole organism thermal tolerance, and their dependence on the background seasonal acclimatization were investigated in the ...
