Comaroff (1977) described midwives and obstetricians regarding childbirth as a condition similar to illness, suitably treated in terms of medical intervention and control, with pregnant women adopting a passive role.

The use of artificial membranes to study the hematopoietic microenvironment began with Seki and his colleagues who implanted cellulose membranes intraperitoneally (ip) in mice. After 7 d, the membranes became coated with adherent cells of peritoneal origin.

During dialysis the water and solute transfer primarily depends on hydraulic permeability and sieving coefficients.
