Lipid Membranes for Membrane Proteins

2014
The molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of membrane proteins requires the setup of an accurate representation of lipid bilayers. This chapter describes the setup of a lipid bilayer system from scratch using generally available tools, starting with a definition of the lipid molecule POPE, generation of a lipid bilayer, energy minimization, MD simulation,

The disk membrane as model for an excitable membrane

Neurochemistry International, 1980
Excitable membranes appear to be biochemically characterized by the presence of a highly specific receptor protein, which undergoes conformational changes upon stimulation and returns to its original conformation for renewed excitability. Our present knowledge of the disk membrane and its receptor protein rhodopsin is reviewed in the light of this ...

MEMBRANES FOR IMPROVED MEMBRANE DISTILLATION AND MEMBRANE CRYSTALLIZATION

2020
Symmetric PVDF porous membranes with Graphene flakes have been prepared by phase inversion technique and used to equip membrane distillation devices. Very high water flux and total salt rejection have been obtained with long-term stability and resistance to fouling.

Mechanics of membrane–membrane adhesion

Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, 2011
Curvature elasticity is used to derive the equilibrium conditions that govern the mechanics of membrane–membrane adhesion. These include the Euler–Lagrange equations and the interface conditions which are derived here for the most general class of strain energies permissible for fluid surfaces.

Durability of Membrane (Lifetime of Membrane)

2015
Durability (or lifetime) of membranes is a critical factor in the commercialization potential of any membrane material, as it must be resilient to the process conditions over an extended period of time. The lifetime of a membrane is also an important factor in the economic evaluation of a membrane process, as replacement of membranes is a significant ...

Nanocomposite membranes for membrane reactors

2013
This chapter discusses nanocomposite membranes in relation to their use in membrane reactors. The concept of hybrid nanocomposites is explained, along with the advantages of using them as a challenging alternative to the organic and inorganic systems that are most frequently used. The chapter further analyses fabrication techniques and characterization
