Weaponizing Culture: The Role of Illiberal Cultural Policy in Slovenia’s Democratic Backsliding

open access: yesPolitics and Governance
The weaponization of cultural policy is one of the crucial, yet underexplored strategies of illiberal political actors. This article investigates the multifaceted illiberal cultural policy measures employed to polarize society, influence the ...

Memory, Recollection and Consciousness in Spinoza's Ethics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Spinoza’s account of memory has not received enough attention, even though it is relevant for his theory of consciousness. Recent literature has studied the “pancreas problem.” This paper argues that there is an analogous problem for memories: if ...

Microscopic Insights into Magnetic Warping and Time‐Reversal Symmetry Breaking in Topological Surface States of Rare‐Earth‐Doped Bi2Te3

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetic doping of the topological insulator Bi2Te3 with erbium adatoms induces out‐of‐plane magnetism and breaks time‐reversal symmetry, opening a Dirac gap and driving a Fermi surface transition from hexagonal to star‐of‐David geometry. Microscopy, spectroscopy, and magnetic dichroism reveal atomically controlled magnetic interactions that tailor the

Transistor‐Level Activation Functions via Two‐Gate Designs: From Analog Sigmoid and Gaussian Control to Real‐Time Hardware Demonstrations

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Screen gate‐based transistors are presented, enabling tunable analog sigmoid and Gaussian activations. The SA‐transistor improves MRI classification accuracy, while the GA‐transistor supports precise Gaussian kernel tuning for forecasting. Both functions are implemented in a single device, offering compact, energy‐efficient analog AI processing ...

Opportunities of Semiconducting Oxide Nanostructures as Advanced Luminescent Materials in Photonics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The review discusses the challenges of wide and ultrawide bandgap semiconducting oxides as a suitable material platform for photonics. They offer great versatility in terms of tuning microstructure, native defects, doping, anisotropy, and micro‐ and nano‐structuring. The review focuses on their light emission, light‐confinement in optical cavities, and

Reunion and reconciliation, reviewed and reconsidered [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
At the close of the Civil War in 1865, many Americans began talking about “reunion” and “reunification,” even “healing” and “reconciliation,” although the precise meaning of those words would remain elusive.

Label‐Free SERS Fingerprinting of Neuroprotein Conformational Dynamics in Human Saliva

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Galvanic molecular entrapment (GME) is a label‐free method for detecting and quantifying neuroprotein conformational states. This technique enables direct surface binding and in situ hotspot generation around molecules, effectively overcoming challenges related to target localization and mismatched hotspot geometries.

Asymmetry of the Ferroelectric Phase Transition in BaTiO3

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Phase transitions are typically assumed to behave identically in forward and reverse. This work shows that in the ferroelectric material barium titanate this is not true: heating drives an abrupt, first‐order jump, while cooling gives a smooth, continuous change.

Review of \u3cem\u3eThe Loyal West: Civil War and Reunion in Middle America\u3c/em\u3e by Matthew E. Stanley [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Interest in Civil War memory and post–Civil War sectional reconciliation has expanded greatly in recent years, as two 2016 historiographical essays attest.1 Matthew E. Stanley\u27s new book, The Loyal West: Civil War and Reunion in Middle America is thus
