Summary Seasonal variation in prey consumption and food resource overlap was evident in an inland water body for mature male, mature female and immature inland silverside (Menidia beryllina). During the first growth phase marked by intensive somatic growth by immature inland silverside, few adults were present in the population (28% of total catch ...

ABSTRACT In an effort to increase the relevancy of fish community data for management, we used fish community data to conduct a statewide assessment of Florida's freshwater fisheries resources and compare the relationships between environmental factors and freshwater fish communities over time.

Lionfish are invasive in the western Atlantic, with populations expanding rapidly since their introduction in the 1980s. Here we evaluate the specificity of the currently available lionfish traditional PCR assay and provide an alternative, more sensitive qPCR assay for the detection of lionfish in the western Atlantic region.

Abstract Current regulations require that toxicity assessments be performed using standardized toxicity testing methods, often using fish. Recent legislation in both the European Union and United States has mandated that toxicity testing alternatives implement the 3Rs of animal research (replacement, reduction, and refinement) whenever possible.

The loss of tidal wetlands in the San Francisco Bay Estuary (SFE) has led to declines in native fish presence. Restoration of tidal wetlands in this area has intensified, with a primary goal of increasing the number of native fishes. We compared the presence of longfin smelt in naturally accreted and beneficial dredge reuse wetlands as a measure of ...

The graphical abstract highlights how the structuring of variation in the life history traits of ray‐finned fish is independent of the sensitivity of their populations to environmental change. Abstract Variation in life history traits in animals and plants can often be structured along major axes of life history strategies.

Preliminary data on use of the inland silverside, Menidia beryllina, to control mosquito larvae.
A study of procedures for spawning and culture of the inland silverside, Menidia beryllina, was conducted. The efficacy of young Menidia, 20 to 22 and 31 to 33 days old, to control mosquito larvae was determined in the laboratory with first and second larval instars of the saltmarsh mosquito Aedes taeniorhynchus.
