Aseptic meningitis is defined as acute meningeal inflammation, fever, and headache in the absence of detectable organisms in the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). Organisms involved can include viruses (enteroviruses being most common), fungi, atypical bacteria, or parasites. Often, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and meningitis overlap.
