INTEREST in meningococcal disease was reawakened by the demonstration in 1963 of sulfonamide resistance in a significant number of strains of the causative organisms.1 Military surveys, in both epidemic and nonepidemic periods,2 3 4 5 6 have been abundant, but there have been few attempts to study the meningococcus in civilian populations.
