The capacity limits of mental simulation
People have severe capacity limits when tracking objects in direct perception. But how many objects can people track in their imagination? In nine pre-registered experiments (N=313 total), we examined the capacity limits of mentally simulating the movement of objects in the mind's eye.

Object combination in mental simulations [PDF]
Studies on the presence of mental simulations during language comprehension have typically focused only on single object properties. This study investigates whether two objects are combined in mental simulations, and whether this is influenced by task instructions.

Mental Simulation during Literary Reading [PDF]
Readers experience a number of sensations during reading. They do not - or do not only - process words and sentences in a detached, abstract manner. Instead they "perceive" what they read about. They see descriptions of scenery, feel what characters feel, and hear the sounds in a story.

Embodied theories of cognition consider many aspects of language and other cognitive domains as the result of sensory and motor processes. In this view, the appraisal and the use of concepts are based on mechanisms of simulation grounded on prior ...

Mental Simulation as a Remedy for Biased Reasoning [PDF]
Prompting mental simulation with a counterfactual scenario has been found to enhance rationality in individuals and groups. Building upon previous findings and the dual-process accounts of reasoning, we hypothesized that debiasing power of mental ...

Volume Estimation Through Mental Simulation [PDF]
Although mental simulation underlies many day-to-day judgments, we identified a new domain influenced by simulation: volume estimation. Previous research has identified various ways in which volume estimates are biased but typically has not presented a psychological process by which such judgments are made.
