Abstract With the aim of identifying QTL affecting wool production and wool quality in Merino sheep, specific regions of chromosomes 3, 4, 11 and 25 were analyzed in eight half-sib families, with an average of 63 offspring per sire. Greasy fleece weight and body weight were recorded at hogget and adult shearing.

THE CLASSIFICATION OF CRIMP IN MERINO WOOL

Merino wools from South Africa obtained from stud flocks were classified into visual crimp types, keeping in mind the way the crimp appeared to the practical wool judge. Wool samples were taken from 134 sheep from stud flocks. All but 18 were rams and ranged in age from lambs to very old sheep.

Abnormal Crimping in Merino and Polwarth Wools

AN abnormal wool, more apparent on older sheep and known as ‘doggy’ wool, is a cause of considerable financial loss in some Merino and Polwarth flocks. Such wool is frequently lustrous and is characterized by reduced frequency of crimps, so that in extreme cases the fibres are almost straight and hair-like.

SUMMARYEstimates of the incidence of coarse fibres and medullation were made from 1014 bales of Merino greasy wool, from the five major wool-selling centres in Australia. A full range of wool types was represented from the fault-free spinners types to the burry, dusty, inferior topmakers' types.

THE INCIDENCE OF DYSTOCIA IN FINE‐WOOL MERINO EWES

The mean incidence of dystocia in 1,510 fine-wool Merino ewes over a ten-year period was 4.1% of ewes lambing. In the 10 year period, 10% of all neonatal mortality was attributed to dystocia and in only 23% of dystocias was lamb presentation abnormal. The incidence of dystocia was not related to age of ewe.
