Revised assessments of the Merluccius paradoxus and M.capensis resources for the south and west coasts combined

2004
Coast-wide assessments for the M. capensis and M. paradoxus resources are conducted, taking into account the recommendations of the January 2004 BENEFIT/NRF/BCLME workshop and newly available data. This revised approach allows more data to be taken into account, but these assessments remain separate for the two species at this stage, with past catches ...

The 2006 operational management procedure for the South African Merluccius paradoxus and M. capensis resources

2006
The algorithm for the 2006 Operational Management Procedure (OMP) to provide TAC recommendations for the South African Merluccius paradoxus and M. capensis resources is empirical, increasing or decreasing the TAC in relation to the magnitude of recent trends in CPUE and survey abundance estimates for both species.

2003 updated assessment for the Merluccius paradoxus hake resource off the south and west coasts

2003
This document presents an updated assessment of the M. paradoxus hake resource off the south and west coasts of South Africa. The previous assessment of this resource is described in Rademeyer and Butterworth (2002).

A computer simulation of the population dynamics of the Cape hakes (Merluccius capensis and M. paradoxus)

2015
Catch and effort statistics for the Cape hakes (Merluccius capensis and M. paradoxus) have indicated a substantial decrease in the stock size over the period 1955-74; consequently, a catch projection model was designed to investigate the hake population.

Further results relating to appropriate TACs for the South African Merluccius paradoxus and M. capensis resources

2006
A simple species-aggregated population model is applied to combined-species hake CPUE data since 1992 as a “reality check” on the short term substantial reductions in TACs being indicated by candidate OMPs when tested under the operating model. These simple computations suggest similar levels of TAC reduction are necessary to restore resource abundance

Species-Disaggregated Candidate Management Procedures for the South African Merluccius paradoxus and M. capensis Resources

2005
The performance of some initial Fox-model and empirical based candidate OMPs is compared in terms of expected catches, future CPUE trends and risk to the resource. The examples presented here should not be viewed as final candidates, but rather “intermediate” examples that are further guiding the OMP development process.

Final proposal for reference set for the joint assessment of the South African Merluccius paradoxus and M.capensis resources

2005
The Reference Set aims to take account of the factors that account for most of the model uncertainty regarding the key considerations of resource status and productivity and this is achieved by including the following ...
