Abstract Wildfire smoke is increasingly degrading U.S. air quality via the emission and transport of pollutants. Smoke's direct role as a pollutant is well‐documented; however, smoke also affects pollutant concentration indirectly by changing the shortwave actinic flux necessary for photochemical reactions.

Satellite‐Based Detection of Methane Emissions From Permafrost Peatland Warming
Abstract Column‐averaged methane (XCH4) observations spanning 2018–2023 by the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) on the Sentinel‐5 Precursor satellite are assessed for evidence of methane (CH4) emissions from permafrost regions. Bi‐monthly TROPOMI XCH4 anomaly maps and soil temperature (Tsoil) anomaly maps from reanalysis data are generated ...

Phase Locking of the Boreal Summer Atmospheric Response to Dry Land Surface Anomalies in the Northern Hemisphere [PDF]
Past modeling simulations, supported by observational composites, indicate that during boreal summer, dry soil moisture anomalies in very different locations within the United States continental interior tend to induce the same upper-tropospheric ...

Understanding the Evolution of Global Atmospheric Rivers With a Vapor Kinetic Energy Framework
Abstract Atmospheric rivers (ARs) often cause damaging winds, rainfall, and floods. However, the physical mechanisms governing their evolution remain poorly understood. To close this gap, we perform a global Vapor Kinetic Energy (VKE) budget analysis. Using two formulations of VKE, we show that ARs are governed by similar mechanisms regardless of ocean

Tendency Bias Correction in Coupled and Uncoupled Global Climate Models with a Focus on Impacts over North America [PDF]
We revisit the bias correction problem in current climate models, taking advantage of state-of-the-art atmospheric reanalysis data and new data assimilation tools that simplify the estimation of short-term (6 hourly) atmospheric tendency errors.

DMS Uplift by Tropical Cyclones as a Source of SO2 in the Upper Troposphere
Abstract Airborne observations from ACCLIP on 2 August 2022, combined with Lagrangian particle dispersion model back trajectories, reveal that SO2 mixing ratios at 14–16 km were enhanced by a factor of 4–6 in regions influenced by tropical cyclones (TCs).
