Mesh Smoothing and Variational Subdivision
, 2012In this chapter, we cover how meshes are smoothed. This is an important topic in geometry processing since acquired meshes are always subject to noise. The basic principles of signal processing are discussed. Then we present the principles behind Laplacian smoothing and Taubin smoothing, which is based on Laplacian smoothing but suffers less from ...

Mesh Smoothing Using A Posteriori Error Estimates
SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, 1997Summary: We develop a simple mesh-smoothing algorithm for adaptively improving finite element triangulations. The algorithm makes use of a posteriori error estimates which are now widely used in finite element calculations. We derive the method, present some numerical illustrations, and give a brief analysis of the issue of uniqueness.

This paper proposes a vertex-estimation-based, feature-preserving smoothing technique for meshes. A robust mesh smoothing operator called mean value coordinates flow is introduced to modify mean curvature flow and make it more stable. Also the paper proposes a three-pass vertex estimation based on bilateral filtering of local neighbors which is ...

A general mesh smoothing method for finite elements
Finite elements in analysis and design, 2019This paper presents a general mesh smoothing method for finite elements. The method deals with two and three-dimensional meshes with virtually any type of element.
