Comparison of Two Mesh Smoothing Techniques for Unstructured Grids

open access: yes, 2014
In this paper two mesh smoothing techniques are applied to unstructured grids. These are based on the solution of elliptic equations, Laplace and Winslow.

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

Hex-Dominant Mesh Improving Quality to Tracking Hydrocarbons in Dynamic Basins

open access: yesOil & Gas Science and Technology, 2014
The proposed method regularizes as far as possible some verticals of a hex-dominant basin mesh; this regularization is used to optimize the numerical simulation of hydrocarbons flow in basins.

Ray-tracing through the Millennium Simulation: Born corrections and lens-lens coupling in cosmic shear and galaxy-galaxy lensing

open access: yes, 2009
(abridged) We study the accuracy of various approximations to cosmic shear and weak galaxy-galaxy lensing and investigate effects of Born corrections and lens-lens coupling. We use ray-tracing through the Millennium Simulation to calculate various cosmic-

Numerical Exploration of Thermal Shock Resistance in MgO–C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A mesostructure‐resolved numerical framework is developed to evaluate the thermal shock resistance of MgO–C refractories. By modeling interface debonding under rapid temperature changes and introducing a modified thermal shock parameter that accounts for mesocracks, the study shows how graphite content and aggregate size influence thermal shock ...

Analysis of wall-smoothed mesh refinement in polymer melt transient flow [PDF]

open access: yesPolímeros
Several numerical simulation strategies for polymer melt flow have been used to optimize simulation time and reduce numerical errors. It is known that in this type of flow, the emergence of numerical diffusion in the cavity walls is common due to the ...

A Topology Optimization Framework for the Inverse Design of Nonlinear Mechanical Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work uses topology optimization to design unit cells for mechanical metamaterials with a prescribed nonlinear stress–strain response. The framework adds contact and postbuckling modeling to synthesize microstructures for three highly nonlinear responses, including pseudoductile behavior, monostable with snap‐through buckling, and bistable ...

Splines in physicochemical studies of liquid binary mixtures

open access: yesComputer Assisted Methods in Engineering and Science, 2023
Physicochemical studies of the organic-water mixtures show that their properties are not linear functions of their concentration but depend on the mixture composition in various ways.

Bioinspired Shape‐Memory Hook Fasteners With Programmable Interlocking and Silent Release

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Bioinspired hook fasteners made from epoxy shape‐memory polymers are shown to switch between strong, secure attachment and gentle, silent release when heated. By combining programmable geometry and material response, these adaptive fasteners outperform commercial systems in strength and noise control, enabling new solutions for robotics, medical ...
