Mesocyclones in Central Europe as seen by radar

Atmospheric Research, 2016
Abstract The occurrence and characteristics of mesocyclones in Central Europe as seen by radar are analysed. A three year analysis shows an annual and diurnal cycle with a wider maximum in the late afternoon/evening compared to the diurnal cycle of general thunderstorms.

Satellite sensing of intense winter mesocyclones over the Japan Sea

2011 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2011
Mesoscale cyclonic activity is one of the characteristics of the cold season in the Japan Sea. High winds and precipitation accompanying intense mesoscale cyclones (MCs) disturb transport and fishery operations in the sea and small sizes and fast development hinders their forecast and detection.

A Winter Mesocyclone over the Midwestern United States

Weather and Forecasting, 1988
Abstract A diagonostic analysis is made of a midwinter mesoscale vortex that developed over the Mississippi Valley and produced moderate to heavy snow with gale force winds (>18 m s−1), lightning, and thunder along a narrow track approximately 1500 km in length. The mesoscale vortex resembled the so-called “polar lows” that form over the subpolar seas.

Characterization of mesocyclonic rotation in severe convection over the Swiss Alps

2021

Persistent rotation is a strong indicator of severe weather hazards in convective storms. This work presents a multi-year record of mesocyclonic rotation tracks derived from archived operational radar data in Switzerland. In addition to the general occurrence, underlying seasonal and daily trends, as well as the influence of synoptic ...

Clear-Air Mesocyclone during the JAWS Project

Monthly Weather Review, 1986
Documentation is furnished for the clear air mesocyclone that propagated through the network of the Joint Airport Weather Studies project near Denver, CO, on June 5, 1982. Despite present classification as a mesocyclone, the analyses here reported have revealed two separate features affecting the area: a mesocirculation, defined by the kinematics of ...

Severe Thunderstorm Evolution and Mesocyclone Structure as Related to Tornadogenesis

Monthly Weather Review, 1979
Abstract Severe thunderstorm evolution is synthesized, using published and unpublished studies of radar, instrumented aircraft, visual and surface observations. These observations reveal the existence of a downdraft (originating at 7–10 km AGL) on the relative upwind side of the updraft.

The Observed Inflow Structure of a Thunderstorm with a Mesocyclone

Monthly Weather Review, 1994
Abstract Inbound and outbound passes were made with an instrumented aircraft at a variety of altitudes in the inflow region of a severe thunderstorm containing a mesoscale vortex. The streamwise vorticity, helicity, and geostrophic thermal advection were estimated from these data.

Diverse Responses of Polar Mesocyclones Genesis Attributable to Orographic Forcing

2020

Polar mesocyclones (PMCs) are mesoscale, maritime cyclones that occur around the high latitudes in the cold seasons. Over the northern Sea of Japan, PMC frequently occurs with cold air outbreaks from the east of the Eurasian Continent.

Simulation of the Mesocyclonic Activity in the Ross Sea, Antarctica

Monthly Weather Review, 1995
The mesocyclonic activity in the southwestern Ross Sea is examined, with emphasis on its forcing by katabatic winds. The three-dimensional version of the meso-gamma-scale primitive equation model Modele Atmospherique Regional is used in which a representation of cloud microphysical processes has been introduced.

Real-Time Automated Detection of Mesocyclones and Tornadic Vortex Signatures

Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 1986
Abstract An algorithm incorporating resolution-dependent shear and velocity thresholds for the detection of meso-cyclones and tornadic vortex signatures in real time is presented. The algorithm identifies bath cyclonic and anticyclonic shear areas, and characterizes them into six catagories.
