Self‐pruning in tree crowns is influenced by functional strategies and neighbourhood interactions
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract As canopy closure imposes light limitation in forests, the dieback of trees' lower branches, known as self‐pruning, defines their live crown base and shapes the structure and function of entire stands.

Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Plant–microbe interactions involve complex resource‐use trade‐offs, yet their responses to combined changes in precipitation frequency and nitrogen (N) deposition remain poorly understood.

Snowmelt timing alters the phenology but not the performance of an understory spring ephemeral plant
Early snowmelt near trees, known as ‘thaw circles’, may lengthen growing seasons and explain why some forest understory plants cluster around trees. However, our field experiment revealed that extended growing seasons with early snowmelt did not improve the performance of a common spring ephemeral plant.

As temperate tree species require warmer temperatures than boreal species, some thermophilous species, such as white pine, increased in abundance at their northern edge during historically warmer periods. Our data reveal that not all temperate species behaved accordingly: maples were scarce during the warm mid‐Holocene, while their abundance increased ...

Early detection of plant community responses to climate warming along mountain roads
Plants are rapidly shifting to higher elevations along mountain roads in Switzerland. These shifts result in a significant community warming of 0.13°C within 10 years. However, because species gained or lost in communities tend to have low cover, this signal is only detectable in unweighted estimates of community‐inferred temperatures—highlighting the ...
