Submesoscale Instabilities in Mesoscale Eddies [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Physical Oceanography, 2017
AbstractSubmesoscale processes have been extensively studied in observations and simulations of fronts. Recent idealized simulations show that submesoscale instabilities also occur in baroclinic mesoscale cyclones and anticyclones. The instabilities in the anticyclone grow faster and at coarser grid resolution than in the cyclone.

Mesoscale eddies in the southwestern tropical Atlantic

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
The southwestern tropical Atlantic is a region of complex ocean dynamic where originates the strong western boundary current system composed of North Brazil current and North Brazil undercurrent.

Three-Dimensional Structure of Oceanic Mesoscale Eddies

open access: yesOcean-Land-Atmosphere Research
Mesoscale eddies contribute to the global oceanic energy budget and cascade; they induce substantial mass and heat transport, thus playing a key role in the global climate system.

On the Genesis of the South China Sea Mesoscale Eddies

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2022
The climatology of the mesoscale eddies in the upper layer of the South China Sea (SCS) is investigated for an understanding of its genesis using the outputs from a 1/12.5° ocean reanalysis.

The Impact of Mesoscale Eddies on Surface and Subsurface Sound Channels in the Kuroshio Extension

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Mesoscale eddies induce significant variations in the temperature and salinity of the upper ocean, thereby exerting a substantial impact on sound propagation.

Imprint of Southern Ocean mesoscale eddies on chlorophyll [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2018
Although mesoscale ocean eddies are ubiquitous in the Southern Ocean, their average regional and seasonal association with phytoplankton has not been quantified systematically yet.

The relationship between mesoscale eddies and the abundance and distribution of jumbo flying squid off Chile [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Jumbo flying squid (Dosidicus gigas), an essential commercial fisheries species in the Humboldt Current System (HCS), is highly sensitive to changes in the marine environment.

Identify habitat distribution within the mesoscale eddies for jumbo flying squid off Chilean waters [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Mesoscale eddies exert profound influences on marine environments, thereby regulating habitat quality and the distribution of marine organisms. The waters off Chile are a region of intense mesoscale eddy activity and represent a major habitat for the ...

Compact Mesoscale Eddies in the South Brazil Bight

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2022
Recent studies suggest that the South Brazil Bight (SBB) hosts strong westward propagating mesoscale eddies. We use 28 years of satellite altimetry data and a new Eddy Atlas to estimate how much of the eddy kinetic energy (EKE) observed in the SBB is accounted for by local eddies, generated in the Brazil Current (BC) region, versus remote eddies ...

Spatial and Temporal Characteristics of Mesoscale Eddies in the North Atlantic Ocean Based on SWOT Mission

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Mesoscale eddies play a crucial role as primary transporters of heat, salinity, and freshwater in oceanic systems. Utilizing the latest Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) dataset, this study employed the py-eddy-tracker (PET) algorithm to identify
