Universal Mathematical Model of Mesoscale Eddy
2021Starting from the movement of Lagrangian particles, a universal nonlinear dynamics model of mesoscale eddies is established. The properties of the model are explained.

Ocean Eddies and Mesoscale Variability
2017This chapter presents a review of the advances in observing the ocean eddy field with satellite altimetry over the last 10 years and addresses the techniques being used to study the finer-scale ocean dynamics. It provides an overview of the reprocessing of along-track data, both from conventional altimetry and the new technology missions, and looks at ...

Mesoscale ocean features: Eddies
2010One of the earliest impacts of satellite data in mainstream oceanography, persuading marine scientists nearly four decades ago that here was a potentially useful new tool, was to reveal the ubiquitous occurrence of mesoscale variability in the open ocean.

Mesoscale Eddies: Disk and Columnar Shapes
2021There are two forms of mesoscale eddies, namely, disk-shaped mesoscale eddies whose diameter is larger than that of the mesoscale eddy axis and cylindrical vortices whose diameter is smaller than that of the mesoscale eddy axis. Usually, the mesoscale eddy is a disk-shaped one, which is also our focus.

Illustrative Visualization of Mesoscale Ocean Eddies
Computer Graphics Forum, 2017AbstractFeature‐based time‐varying volume visualization is combined with illustrative visualization to tell the story of how mesoscale ocean eddies form in the Gulf Stream and transport heat and nutrients across the ocean basin. The internal structure of these three‐dimensional eddies and the kinematics with which they move are critical to a full ...

Dynamics of warm-core mesoscale eddies
Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 1990A nonlinear model of a warm-core ring is presented here. The model treats the warm-core ring as a confined lens of fluid rotating on an f plane. A simple polynomial expansion of the hydrodynamic field variables about the center of mass of the lens provides the basis for an exact reduction of the hydrodynamic equations.

Dynamic Model of Mesoscale Eddies
Geophysical & Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics, 2003Oceanic mesoscale eddies which are analogs of well known synoptic eddies (cyclones and anticyclones), are studied on the basis of the turbulence model originated by Dubovikov (Dubovikov, M.S., "Dynamical model of turbulent eddies", Int. J. Mod. Phys. B7, 4631-4645 (1993).) and further developed by Canuto and Dubovikov (Canuto, V.M. and Dubovikov, M.S.,

Mesoscale eddies of the Arctic Ocean
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1985Subsurface baroclinic eddies in the Arctic Ocean have a diameter of 10–20 km and are confined in depth between 50 and 300m. During the Arctic Ice Dynamics Joint Experiment (AIDJEX) in the central Beaufort Sea between March 1975 and May 1976, extensive information on eddy characteristics, statistics, and behavior was collected from four manned drifting ...

Mesoscale Eddies in Wake of Islands
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1965Abstract The properties of mesoscale eddies in the wake of islands are investigated in the light of their apparent resemblance to the Karman vortex-street pattern. By use of the theoretical results from drag theory and the observed quantities such as cross-stream diameter of the obstacle, wind speed and the dimensions of the pattern, estimates are made
